DEA Bans Mephedrone, M1, MDPV

The DEA is taking advantage of its emergency scheduling authority to ban Mephedrone (4-MMC), MDPV, and Methylone (M1). These are popular synthetic stimulants found in many of the “bath salts” available on the market. The substances will be illegal to possess and sell for 12 months until the DEA and Department of Health and Human Services determines if these substances should be permanently banned. If all goes according to plan, these chemicals will be categorized as Schedule I substances.

This upcoming ban is not surprising. It is obviously a direct response to the booming trend of bath salts being used by irresponsible users. It isn’t uncommon for individuals to overdose and end up in the emergency room.

What does this mean for the bath salts market?

I would be hesitant to say bath salts are now banned. An abundance of research chemicals exist that can replace MDPV, Mephedrone, and Methylone in a heartbeat. It would not surprise me to see cocaine analogues like RTI-126 show up in new re-manufactured bath salts.
